We are pleased to announce the launch of a probe-based PCR assay for the detection and quantification of Hepatitis A virus (HAV). HAV is the only virus in the genus Hepatovirus known to infect humans and it is transmitted by a faecal-oral route. Jaundice is the most recognisable symptom of infection whilst other symptoms may be difficult to distinguish from other pathogens. The incubation period for HAV is 15-50 days but patients may shed the virus prior to this. Whilst infection is usually asymptomatic in young children, HAV causes acute disease in adults and older children. This tends to be self-limiting but may be more severe in patients with underlying medical conditions and can lead to liver failure. The validated sample types for HAV testing at Micropathology Ltd are serum, plasma and stool. The lower limit of detection of the assay is 50IU/ml and the current test turnaround time is 2 days.
