About Us
We provide a clinically supported service for the rapid diagnosis and management of infectious and genetic disease.
Our History
Micropathology Ltd was established in 1995 by Dr David Burnett and Professor Colin Fink as an independent company specialising in rapid diagnosis and research relating to infectious disease and host immune responses.
The company was initially based within the University of Birmingham, Institute of Research and Development, before relocating in 1999 to its current facilities at the University of Warwick Science Park, where it continues to expand its diagnostic and research capabilities.
Recognition For Innovation
In 2003, Micropathology was honoured with the Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Innovation in recognition of its pioneering work in rapid molecular diagnostics and its contribution to improving clinical response times for infectious disease management.
Our Role Today
Micropathology now plays a major role in infection surveillance for the UK transplant population, delivering molecular monitoring and diagnostic services to tertiary and specialist referral centres across the NHS.
The laboratory also provides acute infectious disease testing and specialist molecular investigations for NHS hospitals throughout the UK.
Academic Links
Our scientific staff maintain close working relationships with academic collaborators and university departments, ensuring that applied research and clinical practice remain tightly integrated.
This connection fosters ongoing innovation in molecular diagnostic assay development, validation, and translation into routine diagnostic use.
Accreditation
Micropathology Ltd was first awarded UKAS accreditation to ISO 15189:2012 in November 2017.
The laboratory successfully transitioned to the updated ISO 15189:2022 standard in September 2025.
Our UKAS accreditation number is 9622.
