Dr Liz Powell graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2002 with a first class Honours degree in Pathology, after which she completed her medical degree at the University of Edinburgh, graduating with honours. After Foundation years of medical training in Edinburgh, she moved to London to start her specialist paediatric training and complete MRCPCH.
As part of her paediatric training, Liz undertook an academic clinical fellowship investigating neuroprotective strategies to minimise neonatal brain injury, before joining the Molecular Infectious Diseases Group in the Department of Paediatrics at Imperial College, London.
Liz joins Micropathology Ltd in January 2013, as a funded Medical Research Fellow for 3 years, to become involved with the application of Next Generation Sequencing for the identification of bacterial colonists and pathogens in the respiratory tract in infants and children. It is this information which will improved the targeted rapid diagnosis of pathogens in acutely ill infants admitted to hospital. This work will be a part of her research project at Imperial College into the normal development of the respiratory tract microbiota in infancy.
